Rudy Gobert To Become NBA's Highest-Earning Center Ever After Agreeing Max Extension With Utah Jazz
Rudy Gobert is ready to commit his future to the Utah Jazz and will sign a maximum extension with the team.
Two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert has agreed to a $205 million extension with the Utah Jazz that should see him remain with the team for an additional five seasons.
Gobert, who hails from France, was the center of controversy following the events stemming from his COVID-19 test. The ill-advised actions saw a rift arise between himself and teammate Donovan Mitchell and it was thought that one of the stars would leave the team.
However, it appears the players have put the disagreement behind them and are looking to win a title together in Utah. The Frenchman was eligible for a $228 supermax deal like the one Giannis Antetokounmpo signed with the Milwaukee Bucks, having won the DPOY Award twice, as well as making three All-Star appearances, but claimed he didn't request it in order to allow the team flexibility to continue to build around himself and Mitchell.
"It means that they believe in me," he told ESPN. "They believe in what we've been building over the years with this whole organization, with Coach [Quin Snyder] and all the guys. For me, it's an incredible blessing. It's a very motivating feeling to know that we all share the same vision and we all share this goal for this state and for this franchise.
"I want to win, and I feel like leaving this money on the table for the team just to be able to have better talent around me and Donovan was really important. I want to win, and I believe in this group and I believe in this organization, and I was willing to leave that money on the table for them."
A Huge Milestone
Gobert's agreement will see him become the highest-earning center in NBA history; the deal will be the third biggest ever, behind Giannis' contract with the Bucks and the one Russell Westbrook signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder three years ago.
The 28-year-old is entering the final season of his four-year, $102 million contract with the Jazz and his new deal will see him earn significantly more per season.
