52 Gas Street
WHY WE LOVE IT
Known as the city of a thousand trades, it’s no surprise that Birmingham’s visual landscape is steeped in heritage, with buildings scattered throughout the city that highlight its vibrant industrial past - and the buildings hidden along gas street are of no exception. One building in particular has a unique history: built as a gun factory, and later converted into a stables for horses used on the canal that the building backs onto, 52 Gas Street has seen a lot of action. And now, in its latest stage of life, it’s home to one of our favourite neighbourhood venues.
At its very essence, 52 Gas Street is the bastion of a good time. It’s a lively little spot that knows how to pull in the crowds. Live music flows through the space on a nightly basis, whilst people sip cocktails and craft beers of the highest calibre in comfortable secluded booths or on stools at the bar’s edge. During the summer months, patrons flock the canalside to enjoy a drink in the sun, filling the whole strip with a laid-back yet buzzy vibe.
The bar itself is packed to the rafters with spirits, so you can rest assured that the team can make your favourite libations. And they’re good at what they do - like, really good. Whether it’s an Old-Fashioned or a Bramble, the 52 Gas Street team have mastered the art of mixology, and can turn their hands to every and any cocktail that tickles your fancy. Last time we stopped by, we asked the guys to knock us up an El Diablo and you know what - they absolutely nailed it.
Every now and again, 52 Gas Street also get a street food trader in to provide a bit of grub with your drinks. In the past, Seoul Food stopped by to knock up their incredible burgers (that hoi-sin bacon cheeseburger is other worldly). They’ve also been joined by Dim Sum Su who makes outrageously good bao buns. Keep your eye out on their Facebook page to find out when their next street food event is happening.
So next time you’re planning that post work meet-up, you know exactly what to do.
