I’m Tall and Skinny. How Should I Dress?

Most brands make clothes for the average person. So if you’re on the extreme side of tall, short, slim, or wide, buying clothes can be a hassle. If you’re very tall and very skinny, your headache is doubled. But fear not, some brands cater to your body type, and there are a few tricks you can employ to enhance your stature and boost your confidence.

First, find brands that fit you well. if you don't have any go-to labels, we suggest brands like Uniqlo, Shipley & Halmos,Topman, and Frank & Oak, which all run slim. Also, brands like Hugh & Crye let you buy shirts based on your body type, as opposed to just your neck and arm measurements.

Although you might think buying a size up will fill you out, “slim” and “skinny” cut clothes will actually accentuate your frame and look best on you. Billowy clothes will make you look even skinnier, not to mention unkempt. You should be able to fit a fist between your stomach and your shirt and have no more than 3-4 inches of slack in your pant legs. But don’t think clothes have to fit perfectly right off the rack. If you find a good deal, take it to a tailor and ask to have “darts” put in. That will cinch the back of your shirt, giving it a more tailored fit.

As for styling, one age-old trick is to wear horizontal stripes, which will fill out your silhouette and make you look wider, as opposed to vertical stripes, which have the opposite effect. Also, if you have long legs, wearing your shirt tucked into your belted pants will only make you lower half appear longer. Keep your shirt untucked whenever possible.

Bottom line: don’t shy away from your frame. You’ll look your best wearing clothes that fit you well and don’t hang off your body. But don’t think your clothes are the only thing that shape your image. You can also use your haircut to shape your face.
