Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection contains every Street Fighter ever

Capcom has announced the mother of all compilations, containing 12 different Street Fighters from across the ages.

We're always complaining that most video game collections are frustrating incomplete, but as far as we can see this really does contain every major Street Fighter entry, from the original game through to the three main sequels of the 2D era.

Perhaps there’s a minor variation missing that we haven’t noticed, but the following seems to include everything (deep breath): Street Fighter, Street Fighter II, Street Fighter II: Champion Edition, Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting, Super Street Fighter II, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Street Fighter III, Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact and Street Fighter III: Third Strike.

These are the original coin-op versions, and not any of the later console conversions, but Capcom are promising ‘arcade prefect balancing’ – which may imply some modern tweaking has occurred. Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection will be released for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC in May 2018.

The timing is very suspect though, as the original Street Fighter was first released on August 30, 1987. That means the series will be almost 31 years old by the time this comes out, which suggests it was probably thought of at the last minute when Ultra Street Fighter II on the Switch did unexpectedly well.

We’re not going to look a gift horse in the mouth though, as four of the games will have online options as well, namely Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 3, and Street Fighter III: Third Strike. You’ll be able to play the computer while you wait in lobbies of up to four people, and compete in ranked matches. Each game also gets its own global leaderboard.

An ‘interactive timeline’ is also promised, along with a museum feature that includes concept art, bios, trivia, and a music player. Assuming the ports are good this sounds like the perfect release for even casual Street Fighter fans. There’ll be a physical edition too, and we’d be very surprised if there wasn’t some sort of super expensive collector’s editions on top. We know we’d buy it.

In other, more modern, Street Fighter news Capcom has also announced the line-up for season three of Street Fighter V. This will feature six new characters, starting with Sakura on January 16. That’s the same day as Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition comes out, which will be free to existing owners but works as a new jumping on point for those put off by the game’s troubled launch. The other fighters don’t have dates yet, but include Blanka, Cody, Sagat, and brand-new characters Falke and G. As usual all the characters can be unlocked for free using earnt in-game money, or you can use real cash to get them straight away – including via a season pass.

This looks legitimately great!
