Teesdale CRC
We are a friendly local cycling club for Teesdale based in Barnard Castle, meeting at Glaxo Sports and Social Club, with a racing based outlook covering all aspects of the sport, and adhoc club rides. Teesdale CRC was formed by local riders, who were all members of Ferryhill Wheelers, in 1996, around the Teesdale Mountain Time Trial which celebrated it's 20th Anniversary in April 2012.
Arguably the toughest Time Trial on the CTT calendar, 40 miles over Bollihope Common from Barnard Castle to Stanhope and back, with 1536 metres (over 5000 ft) of climbing. Part of the return leg follows the route of the old Vaux Trophy, professional road race, still remembered fondly by the likes of Barry Hoban and Colin Lewis. The rural nature of SW Durham and North Yorkshire means that there is a lot of cooperation between the local cycling clubs, Teesdale CRC, Bishop Auckland CC, Richmond CC and Colomba CC, as well as Ferryhill Wheelers CC.
The club hosted the North of England Cyclo-X Championships in 2011, and has a strong cyclo-x background, being very active in CXNE. While XC mountain biking has also always been part of the club activities. Hamsterley Forest is within Teesdale, and its continued expansion gives the club a fantastic facility on our doorstep, alongside the moorland riding in the dale.
The club hopes the huge interest in BMX in the town with the recent completion of The Hub facility by TCR (Teesdale Community Resources) will bring a whole new generation to cycling in the dale, and Barnard Castle has a new bike shop for the first time in many years, Spitfire Cycles. Come and join us.
