Elswick Harriers are the oldest established athletic club in the North East of England having been founded in 1889. In the same year, the Amateur Athletic Associations recommended rules become compulsory for all athletics in Britain. Elswick Harriers are proud of their tradition of being the oldest established club in the North East of England, founded in 1889. Over the years we have discovered many successful athletes including three Olympians: Mike McLeod, Alan Lillington and Alex Burns. We are based at Newburn Activity Centre, Grange Road, Newcastle Upon Tyne. The centre is situated on the edge of the Tyne Riverside Country Park and offers superb opportunities for road, off road and cross country training in a great environment.
The club has almost 300 members, made up of juniors, seniors and vet age group runners. We pride ourselves on being a competitive and friendly club. Our training sessions are held at Newburn Activity Centre on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, meeting at 7.00 pm in the sports hall for a prompt 7.15 pm start. For the Senior Squad, a total warm up / training session / warm down usually takes between 45 and an hour.
There are various group training sessions with coaches available at all training sessions. Some members also meet informally on Sunday mornings for a longer run (9 a.m. gathering outside the leisure centre entrance). These runs typically last around 60 mins 90 mins at an easy run pace: sometimes a bit less, sometimes a bit more! You choose your pace and distance.
