Broadlands (Herefordshire) Badminton Club
Broadlands was formed by players who attended Ron Morris' coaching sessions at the Sixth Form College, when the course ended there were no clubs for the players to join so Ron suggested they form their own club. The club then needed a name and decided on the name of the sports hall and Broadlands Badminton Club was born, the players elected a committee and quickly recruited players from more coaching sessions and players that had previously played for other clubs.
The club continued to grow in membership and had their first AGM at the Antelope in 1977, when 30 members attended. We entered teams into the Hereford Leagues and quickly became one of the best clubs in the County. However, the Club was reluctant to enter a team into the Wyedean League as they only played with feather shuttles and we only played with plastic, in 1979 we entered a team into Wyedean League and agreed to play with feather shuttles in all leagues and for club night.
Over the years Broadlands have had a number of County Players in the club who helped bring on the younger players to a high standard. We have also encouraged members to take their coaching badges and presently have 4 level 2 coaches and one level 1 amongst our members. After 33 years playing at the 6th Form College Broadlands decided to move to the Cathedral School in 2009 where we have settled in very well. We have thought of changing our name but felt that we started as Broadlands, so Broadlands we will always be!!
